Model audio and English pronunciation evaluation criteria

British English pronunciation will also pass if it accurately matches the target phonetic symbol. Model audio uses American English or the audio specified for textbook-aligned learning materials.

Audio used as a model

The usual model audio is American English. Textbook-aligned learning materials use the audio specified for those materials as the model. British English pronunciation does not fail simply because the model audio is American English.

Passing criteria

The evaluation accepts the range of pronunciations by Japanese speakers that can be recognized as the sound represented by the target phonetic symbol. It checks whether you are pronouncing that phonetic symbol accurately, rather than distinguishing between American and British English.

When the same word has different phonetic symbols

The pronunciation of the same word can vary by region. For example, if you use an Australian English pronunciation corresponding to a different phonetic symbol from the one targeted in the learning material, you may not pass. This does not mean that all Australian English pronunciation is treated as incorrect.

What to check when practicing

Check the phonetic symbol and model audio provided in the learning material as you practice. If you feel that the result does not match your intended pronunciation, contact support with the app name, learning material and lesson names, word, phonetic symbol shown in the material, and evaluation result.
