Enabling your microphone in Chrome on Android

Check Chrome’s microphone permission in Android, then also allow the learning site in Chrome. On Android 12 or later, also check that the microphone is not turned off for the entire device.

Who should do this: the person learning in Chrome on Android. These instructions are based on Google’s standard settings; the display varies by manufacturer and OS.

Check whether the microphone is enabled for the whole device

On Android 12 or later, you cannot record if the microphone is turned off for the entire device. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings and check that the microphone is not blocked. If the option is not there, see the manufacturer’s instructions.

Check the Chrome app’s permission

  1. Open Android’s 「設定」 (Settings) → 「アプリ」 (Apps). If you cannot find Chrome, open the full list of apps.
  1. Open 「Chrome」 → 「権限」 (Permissions) → 「マイク」 (Microphone).
  1. Select 「アプリの使用中のみ許可」 (Allow only while using the app). If you use 「毎回確認」 (Ask every time), allow access when prompted during recording.

Check permission for the learning site

  1. Open Chrome, then use the menu to the right of the address bar to open 「設定」 (Settings) → 「サイトの設定」 (Site settings) → 「マイク」 (Microphone).
  1. Use the setting that lets sites request microphone access. If the learning site is listed under 「ブロック中」 (Blocked), select it and allow access.
  1. Return to the learning page, reload it, and follow the on-screen instructions to start recording. If an access prompt appears, check the site name, then allow access.
  1. Keep Chrome in the foreground while speaking. On screens with an input waveform, check that its height changes with your voice. Follow the on-screen instructions to stop recording.

If you opened it from the home screen

First, open the same learning site directly in Chrome and compare whether you can record. If the web app has a separate permission setting, check that too. For an app installed from Google Play, check that app’s microphone permission.

If you cannot change the settings or the issue persists

If you cannot change settings on a school or company device, contact the person responsible for managing it. If the issue persists, tell support your device model, Android and Chrome versions, how you opened the site or app, and what is displayed when recording.
