Enabling your microphone in Windows

Allow your browser to use the microphone in Windows, then also allow the learning site to use it in your browser. After that, test whether the microphone you want to use picks up your voice.

Who should do this: the person using the computer for learning. These instructions focus on Windows 11. If you cannot change the settings on a school or company device, contact the person responsible for managing the device.

Check Windows permissions

  1. Open 「スタート」 (Start) → 「設定」 (Settings) → 「プライバシーとセキュリティ」 (Privacy and security) → 「マイク」 (Microphone).
  1. Turn on 「マイクへのアクセス」 (Microphone access) and the setting that allows apps to use the microphone.
  1. Turn on 「デスクトップ アプリにマイクへのアクセスを許可する」 (Let desktop apps access your microphone). This setting is also required for Chrome and Edge.

Chrome and Edge may not appear in the list of apps that can be turned on or off individually. The desktop app setting applies to multiple apps together.

In Windows 10, open 「設定」 (Settings) → 「プライバシー」 (Privacy) → 「マイク」 (Microphone). Do not confuse these screen names with those in Windows 11. Standard support for Windows 10 has ended, so also check with the person responsible for managing the device about which OS to use.

Allow the learning site in your browser

In Chrome

  1. Open Chrome’s 「設定」 (Settings) → 「プライバシーとセキュリティ」 (Privacy and security) → 「サイトの設定」 (Site settings) → 「マイク」 (Microphone).
  1. If the learning site appears in the list of sites not allowed to use the microphone, select that site and allow microphone access. Also check the microphone you want to use in the input device list.

In Edge

  1. Open Edge’s 「設定」 (Settings) → 「プライバシー、検索、サービス」 (Privacy, search, and services) → 「サイトのアクセス許可」 (Site permissions) → 「すべてのサイト」 (All sites).
  1. Select the learning site and check its 「マイク」 (Microphone) setting. If access was denied, allow the microphone to be used on that site.

If a first-time permission prompt appears, check that it is for the PRONTEST learning site, then allow access. Menu locations may change when the browser is updated.

Test the input device

  1. In Windows 11, open 「設定」 (Settings) → 「システム」 (System) → 「サウンド」 (Sound), then select the microphone to use under 「入力」 (Input).
  1. In the microphone properties, press 「テストの開始」 (Start test), speak briefly, then press 「テストの停止」 (Stop test). Use 「再生」 (Play) to check the recorded voice, and adjust the input volume if needed.
  1. Reload the learning page and record again, following the on-screen instructions.

Take action based on the test results

  • If your voice is not picked up in the Windows test either: Check the connection, mute switch, and selected microphone. If the device is not listed, contact the person responsible for managing the device or microphone, or the manufacturer.
  • If you can record in Windows: Recheck the learning site’s permission. If your voice is still not recognized, tell support how the waveform responds and the error text.
